Important Reminders

  • File Form 2290 for any taxable vehicles first used on a public highway during or after July (of the current year) by the last day of the month following the month of first use.
  • You must have an established employer identification number (EIN) to file Form 2290. If you don’t please contact us now if you don’t already have an EIN; it takes us about two weeks to establish new EINs.

Filing Deadlines
The filing season for Form 2290 filers is July 1 through June 30. The filing deadline for Form 2290 is based on the month you first use the taxable vehicle on public highways during the reporting period.

  • For vehicles you first use on a public highway in July, file Form 2290 between July 1 and August 31.
  • The tax for the current filing season will be prorated for vehicles you first use on a public highway after July. File Form 2290 by the last day of the month following the month in which you first used the vehicle on a public highway.

Vehicle Registration
The filing deadline is not tied to the vehicle registration date. Regardless of the vehicle’s registration renewal date, taxpayers must file Form 2290 by the last day of the month following the month in which the taxpayer first used the vehicle on a public highway during the taxable period.

Your Form 2290 must be filed the month after a taxable vehicle is first used on public highways during the current period that began on July 1 and ends on June 30 of the following year. The form must be filed by the last day of the month following the first month of use. The filing rules apply whether you are paying the tax or reporting suspension of the tax. Annual filings of IRS Form 2290 are typically completed from July 1 through August 31.

IRS 2290 Mandate for Larger Fleets

Any fleet that has over 25 vehicles over 55,000 pounds (combined gross vehicle weight) must electronically file their Form 2290.

Before you can file electronically, you must choose to pay taxes via Electronic Funds Withdrawal (ACH Debit), which is the most common, or through the federal Electronic Filing Tax Payment System (EFTPS).
